Ditch the Should: Fostering Belonging Through Disruptive Times

Location: Salon ABC

We live in a world of shoulds that rule us, tear us down, interfere with our self-care, and steal our peace. Should causes comparison and envy, regret and guilt, feelings of defeat, fatigue, and burnout. Worse, shoulds cause us to shape-shift, constrict our body and words, hide from our truths, shove down our creative spirit, and play small.

These shoulds also create biases and judgments that hinder our efforts in DEI, preventing us from building truly inclusive environments. In the last year, 80 percent of employees reported experiencing burnout at their current jobs because of shoulds like these.

Shoulds should shape our creative genius and our culture, not squelch it. Additionally, there is often pushback against DEI initiatives, which exacerbates the effects of shoulds by reinforcing exclusion and stifling innovation. This keynote reveals how to disrupt the “bullshould” and transition to good should, take back your power, and bring it to the culture and the bottom line.
